Scalp Micropigmentation

Scalp micropigmentation

On Monday this week I was being tagged into a post from ITV by loads of clients and technicians, at a glance I was absolutely buzzing. They were showing a live demonstration about Scalp Micropigmentation, YEAHHHHHHH BABY this was fantastic. I thought finally this is what the industry needs, some exposure and awareness about how life changing this treatment can be for men and women out there suffering from all types of hair loss.  This was very short lived. Within minutes my phone is bleeping and all the negative posts, screen shots and very upset technicians went to the scalp micropigmentation forums to unload. Before I could even find the ITV footage, I realised this wasn’t great. What can I say, I was disappointed but didn’t want to take everyone’s word for it I wanted to find the footage and see for myself.

I’ve attached the link below for you all to see but I do want to explain why me and a lot of other technicians were appalled by this.

Scalp micropigmentation [SMP] is a form of cosmetic tattooing, you are breaking the skin therefore the levels of hygiene and sanitation are of upmost importance to prevent infection and cross contamination. This WAS NOT implemented on the demonstration on ITV, the technician had no mask on, no apron on, her hair was down and she had long puffy sleeves that was draping over the client. This is standard practice with every single procedure I perform and is the fundamentals of training in any procedure where the skin is broken.

The facts that were given where incorrect when pigment is worked into the skin we work into the dermal layer and not the epidermis. The epidermis renews itself fully after 28 days therefore if pigment is placed in this area it would not last and look very uneven during the healing process. The pigment is place in the upper layers of the dermis thus lasting long term and maintenance required around 4-6 years.

With regards to the finished product, all technicians work very differently and create different hairlines, density and colour. My photos below resemble this and 95% of my clients go for understated, subtle and age appropriate finishes and not for a harsh finish.

What I would say to anyone interested in looking into this procedure do your research, have consultations with technicians, ask to see healed results and client testimonials. Scalp Micropigmentation [SMP] when performed correctly is undetected and that is what I strive to achieve with all my clients in my Doncaster Clinic.

While most people do not find SMP painful, there is a level of pain or discomfort felt during the procedure; however, everyone has different pain thresholds. The level the of any discomfort would be a three out of 10 at most (with 10 being very painful and one being not painful at all). Some describe the feeling of a small pinprick on the scalp while others even find it relaxing.

Scalp Micropigmentation is the easiest long-term solution, if you suffer from hair loss or thinning hair, although the initial procedure may seem expensive, the results are immediate. Prices start from £400 and go up to around £3000; the exact cost of the treatment will be determined after a personal consultation.

For the first few days exercise or extensive sweating is not allowed, it is important not to let your scalp to get wet, or wear hats that may rub on your new treatment. After four days the head can be washed or shaved. Take sensible precautions in the sun using high factor sun creams and keep your scalp moisturised daily. Keeping your scalp in good condition benefits your overall appearance as well as your pigment.

Scalp micropigmentation is suitable for men and women from the age of 18. During consultations medical history will be checked for possible temporary or permanent conditions which may affect the treatment.
